I watch tv. I watch a lot of tv. I might even watch too much tv. But tonight after watching Once Upon a Time, one of my favorite tv shows, I watched Time After Time. This show is based on the movie from 1979 about Jack the Ripper stealing H.G. Wells’ time machine and Wells trying to stop him.
Why am I talking about a tv show in a Christian blog. Well first off Time After Time is on ABC and Disney owns ABC. There is a big controversy about the upcoming live action Beauty and the Beast having a gay character. Reverend Franklin Graham is attacking Disney because of this. I can understand him not wanting a children’s movie to address the homosexuality issue.
But Reverend Graham is also one of the biggest named Christian pastors who are giving Trump a free pass. Trump a man who lies constantly, a man who is an unrepentant adulterer and sexual predator. This is a man who shows no mercy toward immigrants whose only crime was coming here illegally to give their children a better life.
This is a man who signed a bull making it easier for those who are mentally ill to buy firearms. Did The good Reverend speak up against this bill that will lead to more suicides and more impulsive violence?
No. He speaks up against Disney and says that Disney is attacking Christian values “They’re trying to push the LGBT agenda into the hearts and minds of your children—watch out!” He posted this on Facebook.
This post is not about homosexuality. I am not going to talk about that issue. I am writing about how I am sick of the Republicans pushing pro violence, pro greed, anti Christ agenda into the hearts of Christians. How I am sick of them pushing away people who might come to Christ.
This brings me to Time After Time. Wells was a socialist utopian. He believed by this time we would live in a world without crime, greed, want. Etc. but when he came to our present and watched what was going on in the world he cried.
We live in a Godless world. We live in a world where we love self above God and neighbor. We live in a world where our needs, our wants drive us. We do not live in a selfless world. We live in world where Jack the Ripper would be right at home. People like Graham help make it so.
But you know what in a spiritual way Franklin Graham is worse than Jack the Ripper. Because he talks about Christ. He talks about the Kingdom of God but he serves an evil Kingdom. A Kingdom of greed and the gun. He talks about Christian values when giving aid and comfort to one who hates Christ.
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
Jack the Ripper, at least this version of Jack the Ripper does not believe in God or Wells’ utopia. He believes that man is hunter or hunted. He loves this new world. I don’t know if this Jack the Ripper would be a Trump supporter. I don’t care. All I know is that a man of God should not fight a small fight that does no good for the Kingdom while supporting a man who stands for everything that our God stood against.
But I am a Christian. I do believe in a utopia. I believe in a Kingdom when fully manifested there will be no war.
Isaiah 2:4 He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
There will be no Jack the Rippers. There will be no NRA. There will be no Donald Trumps. And there will be no false prophets railing against a stupid movie while the leader of the land makes mockery of everything that God stands for.
I pray that Franklin Graham will come to his senses. I pray that he will read scripture. Read the Prophets, Matthew 5-7,Galatians 5, and 2 Timothy 3. I pray that he rebukes Trump and the false apostate Christianity that he appeals to.
Jack the Ripper was a monster but at least his actions, his deeds matched his worldview. The Reverend Franklin Graham has Jesus, he doesn’t have an excuse.
