Kevin Sorbo: WHAT IF? Praying For A Miracle of God’s Transformation.

IMG_3307I am addicted  to twitter and Facebook. I am addicted to political and religious pages, of organizations and of celebrities. I followed Kevin Sorbo and what he writes distresses me as a Christian.

I watched Hercules as a kid.  Never was a huge fan of either Hercules or Xena but I did watch the show. I remember when I first saw him in an episode of the Commish where he played a possible stalker of one of the main characters but it turned out to be a fellow cop.The same year he played a computer engineer nerd in a Murder She Wrote episode.

I tried to watch Andromeda, even as a sci-fi fan, I really didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t really become a fan until I became a Christian and watched What If?

What If? was one of the best Frank Capra movies that Frank Capra never directed. It was about a Donald Trump like business tycoon who cared only about money. He moved away from his small town, and even worse moved away from God.

He gets into a car accident and wakes up a pastor in a small church married to Kristy Swanson and learns from an angel played by John Ratzenberger what he was missing and he accepts Jesus Christ and is transformed.

Sometimes faith based movies can be as subtle as a sledge hammer and can be too much for a lapsed agnostic turned Evangelical Christian. This is one of the reasons why I can’t get through God’s Not Dead.

What If? And Letters to God about a sick child who writes letters to God and how it helps a lost postman find life through Jesus Christ were my two favorite faith based movies.

One of my favorite scenes is when his character  Ben Walker is giving his first sermon. He has not come to Christ yet, he is still the Donald Trumpesque tycoon “trapped” in an alternate reality. It is the ultimate prosperity Gospel sermon given to a congregation that is as far from that apostasy as a church possibly can get. Kind of a sermon Donald Trump’s favorite pastor Paula White would give.

It is a great movie about God’s transformative power. The problem is I can’t watch it anymore. The star, who did his best acting work in his career on this film, supports Donald Trump. He supports a man who has lied repeatedly, who has slandered,a man whose budget serves money so much it is cruel.

The things Sorbo posts are right wing boilerplate and it saddens and sickens me. You can’t help but see Donald Trump in Ben Walker. The main difference is that Ben Walker never bragged about trying to score with another man’s wife or talking about grabbing women by the (explitive deleteted).

Around the same time I started reading Sorbo’s vile posts. I was over at my friend’s house. They are agnostics and are hostile to the church. Their main argument against the church is the hypocrisy of people like Kevin Sorbo. I asked my friend if she would be a Christian if there was no hypocrisy of the religious right. She said she didn’t know but she wouldn’t hate us as much.

Anyway we watch and make fun of stupid movies. Some are a little to risqué for me. One of these was FDR American Badass. This movie if you can call it that is about president FDR played by Barry Bostwick that was bitten by a wearwolf and got polio. This movie has foul language, has FDR’s secretary licking ketchup off of his legs, and Abraham Lincoln who appears to him in a pot induced vision. The actor who played Abraham Lincoln is none other than Kevin Sorbo.

Kevin Sorbo has acted in one of my favorite movies of all time and one of my least favorite movies of all time. An actor needs work and I won’t begrudge him that it for an actor who speaks out for Christian values you shouldn’t Star in a piece of filth like FDR American Badass.

I don’t know how Kevin Sorbo became like this. I don’t know if it is a reaction to the liberal extremism you sometimes see in Hollywood. All I know is that supporting Trump and his polices go against scripture.

The scripture where the  name of my blog comes from says it all

2 Timothy 3New International Version (NIV)

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

What If? Kevin Sorbo stood up. What If? He would stand up and speak out against our president and his cruel policies. Policies that will hurt the working poor and hurt the planet that God gave us to protect not sell out to the highest bidder. If he would do this, I believe that many people would have their hearts changed and transformed.  People who have drunk the Donald Trump flavor-aid. They would be transformed like Ben Walker.

And people like my friends. People who when they think of Christianity, they don’t think of a God who loved us so much that he came to earth as a human, lived among us, and suffered and died for us. They think of hypocrites who speak the loudest about Christ but are the farthest from Him. They will be transformed like me.

God Is Not Dead. He is alive. He is changing the world. Kevin Sorbo if you are reading this. Let God transform your heart like he did Ben Walker.

I am also praying for our president. I don’t know if God will perform a What If? Style miracle. But I am praying that our president’s heart will be transformed and he will allow Christ into His heart and fight against the hatred, fear, and greed of our culture that he helped foster. Because fighting for righteousness with God at his back. Regardless of how that would affect him politically that would make him Donald Trump: American Badass.
