Words like evil and sin sometimes seem antiquated in today’s world. That is why I think the doctrine of sin, the importance of the concept of sin is so important particularly when it comes to Christians.
Christians like most humans like to jump to extremes. One side is judgmental, pointing out sins, and accusing people. The other side believes like this secular world that there is no such thing as sin. That we should just be good to our fellow neighbor but sin is a word that should never be mentioned.
What are sins. To some it is a list of wrongs of affronts to God. Things you don’t want to do because you are afraid of being punished by God.
To me sins are quite plainly anything you do that puts yourself above your fellow neighbor and God. All sins spring forth from selfishness. And humanity since it’s beginning has been a very selfish race. Always putting themselves number one.
Look at the first sin In the Bible. Eve and Adam disobeying God and eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The serpent that Adam and Eve could be like God. It wasn’t that Adam and Eve thought for themselves that was the original sin. No it was that they thought for THEMSELVES. They put their own wants and needs above God. We have been living and dying by our sins ever since.
I also find it interesting that the third sin after eating the apple and Eve lying about it was Adam not taking responsibility but blaming Eve for his own lack of impulse control. Men have been blaming women for their actions ever since.
Sin is part of our DNA. we may try to do good but we always are lead astray by our petty prides and hatreds. Even when fighting sin we often decide to fight sin with sin and fire with fire. The systematic exploitation of the working poor is sin but out of the fight against that oppression came Marxism that lead to death and destruction. That is one of the reasons why I am a Christian. I am sick of this sinful world and I know the only way to fight sin is through the Holy Spirit, and that is a gift that Jesus gives believers. When you have love, kindness, peace, joy, faithfulness, gentleness, patience, and self control you are able to combat your sins. You will not win every battle but you are strengthened for this fight.
That is what my next series of blogs is going to be about. Now the 7 deadly sins can not be found in the Bible. But it is a great way to some up sin.
I will write about how the 7 plague me, have Donald J Trump is a human representative of them all, and how the religious right actually endorses or condones sins more than any non believer could ever dream of.
And I am not perfect as you will see in these next seven blogs but it is better to be a sinner saved by Grace who falls a lot but always humbly takes His Lord’s hands to help him up than someone who willfully sins, doesn’t seek repentance, and casts judgement on others.
